For adults

We teach cello to adults, one to one with a teacher – in the daytime or in the evening. You don't need to have played before, and you can start at any time of the year. You choose lessons of 30, 45 or 60 minutes, and you can play anything from classical music and jazz to pop and folk music. You need a cello to practise on at home; we work with firms that rent out string instruments, so get in touch if you would like to rent one. You begin with a trial lesson, where the teacher gets to know you. Then, together, you find a day and time that suits you.

What the student learns

Reading music: from day one you will learn to read and play the cello at the same time, as we believe that reading music is necessary to develop your skills on the instrument.
Rhythm: the most important feature of music is rhythm. It is the infinite combinations that allow us to quickly recognize a given piece and distinguish one from another. We therefore train our sense of pulse by clapping different rhythms and going through all the note values during your cello lessons.
Hearing and singing: being able to sing is one of the most important factors in the development of hearing. We develop our ear by singing different notes that we play and practicing recognizing them on the cello, but also on other instruments.
Sound: we go through the different nuances and timbres of the cello as the cello should be like an extension of the voice.
Technique: a good technique is a prerequisite for being able to have a varied repertoire, therefore during our cello lessons we focus on basic string technique and left hand technique.
Ergonomics: sitting correctly when playing is extremely important to avoid occupational injuries. In ergonomics, the cello teacher works with the student to learn different exercises for the shoulders and sit bones. These are the very things that help maintain good posture when playing the cello.

How it works

At Malmö Musikskola we believe that continuity is crucial for success in music studies.

Unlike other subjects that are naturally used in everyday life, music requires regular practice and guidance, especially at the beginning of studies.

Therefore, we offer a planned study program of 40 lessons over a year, with 17 lessons taking place in the autumn semester and 17 in the spring semester. The remaining lessons are flexibly distributed, mostly during the summer.

Our approach provides students with a stable structure and the opportunity to progress continuously, while enjoying breaks in the summer, as well as during the fall, sports, Christmas and Easter holidays. This balance ensures that each student can progress and achieve their goals without losing touch with their studies for extended periods.

We look forward to supporting you or your child in a stimulating and inspiring musical journey.
